Influenza Vaccines for High Risk Dogs

For several years, we have offered a vaccine against one type of influenza called canine influenza virus (CIV) H3N8. There is another canine influenza virus known as CIV H3N2 that appeared in the US in early 2015. Because there have been recently documented cases in the US and in the Bay Area of both types of influenza, we recommend having high risk dogs vaccinated against both types of influenza. The vaccine against H3N2 was recently released and we have it in stock at this time. It is a vaccine that appears to be very safe. It is administered as 2 subcutaneous injections, 3 weeks apart and a single annual booster. You can visit dogflufacts.com for more information.

The dogs who are most at risk are the dogs who frequent dog parks, doggie day care centers, and crowded boarding facilities as well as dogs who have chronic lung or heart problems. Please call your doctor to discuss your dog's risk for CIV H3N2 particularly if you plan to board your dog. We will answer all of your questions about dog flu and help you decide whether vaccinating is right for your pet.
