Benefits of Pets for Kids

There are as many reasons for having a pet as there are families who have one. Some parents want their children to learn about responsibility, and they pick out a furry family member together. Others surprise their children with a puppy or kitten on a birthday or holiday. And sometimes kids manage to find their own pets, and parents have to ponder the question, “Can I keep him?”

COVID-19 has changed the familiar routine of school and playdates, making this an especially challenging time to be a kid. Fewer social interactions with their friends can increase loneliness and a sense of isolation in children. Having a pet to talk to and play with can help lessen these feelings during this stressful time.

Whether you’re a child or an adult, there are lots of benefits to owning a pet. Some of the most common include:

  • Animals provide companionship. There’s a reason Shadow is a popular pet name, as dogs and sometimes cats have been known to follow their people around constantly, and even sleep with them. There is something very appealing about that kind of devotion.
  • Entertainment is a byproduct of pet ownership. Playing with an animal, going for walks, teaching them tricks are all great ways to spend your time.
  • Your child will benefit. Mental and physical health will both be improved with pets, while kids learn life lessons along the way. Pets relieve stress and can help boost a child’s self-esteem, and a good game of “chase” keeps everybody active.
